The Revolutionary Communist Party is expanding from coast to coast. Following on the heels of a very successful School of Communism on the west coast, we have now held a marvelous Marxist School on the east coast! The Halifax Marxist School had 30 registrants from across the Maritimes.

Communism has spread throughout the Atlantic region over the last two years with comrades starting to build in Sydney, Yarmouth, New Glasgow, St John, Wolfville, and Charlottetown. This school served as a rallying point for the forces of Communism in the Maritimes and aimed to arm comrades with the ideas and methods necessary to build the RCP in their towns, universities, and neighbourhoods.

The school featured discussions on “The need for revolutionary theory”, “How to build the revolutionary party”, “How to win the masses”, and “How the Bolsheviks won the Russian Revolution”. Each session developed attendees’ appetite for further study on these important questions, as demonstrated by the constant activity around our book stall and the fact that we sold over $1,000 in Marxist literature!

The school ended with a session on “Imperialism and the fight for a free Palestine” which we decided to open to the public. This caught the attention of the Dalhousie University administration who told us we could not host such an event on campus. We weren’t intimidated by such a blatant act of repression against the movement, opting to host the event on the front steps of the Dalhousie Arts Centre for all to see. This drew out over 30 attendees!

This session discussed why the struggle against imperialism is ultimately a struggle against the entire capitalist system. Therefore, the best methods for the  struggle against imperialism are class struggle methods. We used the occasion to highlight the recent successes of the student strike for Palestine campaign and how we could implement these ideas on campuses across the Atlantic region.

As the school drew to a close the next step was clear to all comrades: bring these lessons back to our workplaces, universities and neighbourhoods and use them to build the RCP!
