On March 28, the Trudeau Liberal government tabled its 2023-4 budget—the second of its three-year agreement with the New Democratic Party (NDP). All told, in the face of runaway inflation, chronic unemployment, collapsing services, and a looming recession, it offers little for workers but cuts and war—with the support of the NDP.
The Trudeau government has announced they’re spending $70 billion on new fighter jets. This comes at a time when most working-class Canadians are struggling to even pay the bills. The NDP, which had previously opposed the purchase, has reversed their position, limiting their criticism to the insistence that the jets be made in Canada!
While Canada’s schools, hospitals, and communities lay in disrepair, the Trudeau government has inked a deal to purchase 88 F-35 Fighter jets, designed for new air strikes which will level schools, hospitals, and communities abroad.
The auditor general report on government pandemic spending has fueled a frenzy against Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) recipients. The National Post wailed, “Canada may have just experienced the greatest fraud in its entire history”. In actuality, the real fraud is the fact that this audit makes no mention of $686 billion gifted to corporations.
As federal and provincial governments prepare to spend $500 million on the celebration of Canada’s 150th “birthday”, Canadian workers continue to be forced to accept privatizations, falling living standards, and austerity. At a time of growing anger against the establishment, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has instead chosen to defend the status quo. In doing so, he has handed […]

With rightwing populist Pierre Poilievre leading in the polls by a wide margin, many are […]
On March 28, defence minister Anita Anand announced that Canada would be going ahead with the purchase of a fleet of 88 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin. The budget for the planes was presented as $19 billion, but this is just the up-front cost, and we can be sure that the final bill will […]
The Liberals and the NDP have announced a “confidence and supply” deal to prop up the minority Trudeau government until 2025. In exchange for voting for the next four Liberal budgets, and opposing any confidence motions, the NDP gained a letter talking about dental care and pharmacare, plus a number of other issues. However, when […]
Justin Trudeau has finally found his “just watch me” moment. In Canada it seems that world-historic figures and events do indeed appear twice. Pierre Trudeau for Justin Trudeau, the War Measures Act for the Emergencies Act. Marx was right—it really is a tragedy the first time and a farce the second. After weeks of inaction, the Trudeau […]
