Nova Scotia floods: Deadly climate created by a dying system

On July 21 Nova Scotia was hit by devastating floods. Four people are dead, including two six year-olds and one 14 year-old, after the vehicles they were evacuating in were swept off the road and submerged in floodwaters. We must be clear that the blame for the damage and tragic loss of life lies squarely at the feet of the bosses and the capitalist system.

‘Culture War’ in New Brunswick—Higgs rolls back protections for trans students

On June 8, the New Brunswick government rolled back protections for trans students in public schools. This is an attack on the rights of trans people which will inevitably harm vulnerable children. 

1,800 Halifax school support staff on strike

More than 1,800 Halifax-area school support staff, represented by CUPE 5047, have been on strike for better pay since May 10. These staff support some of the students most disadvantaged by the capitalist system, including African Nova Scotian students, Indigenous students, and students with disabilities.

Newfoundland moves to crush ambulance workers strike

Faced with eroding wages, difficult conditions, and a private employer who refuses to listen, nearly 120 ambulance workers in Newfoundland exercised their democratic right to strike on Jan. 20. Meanwhile, the provincial government is hard at work trying to strip them of that right.

Higgs launches pro-scab legislation in war against New Brunswick workers

Ever the faithful servant of the Irvings and other capitalists, New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs’ Progressive Conservative government has tabled pro-scab legislation. By modifying the Public Service Labour Relations Act, the government is now giving itself the power to replace “designated essential workers” with scabs in future strikes.
