Faced with the biggest crisis in the history of the country, Canada heads to the polls on April 28. By all estimates, this should be a consequential election. However, we are only presented with the illusion of choice. In reality, neither the Liberal Mark Carney nor the Conservative Pierre Poilievre offer a solution for the working class.
The media and the liberal establishment strain to show how different Carney is from Poilievre. But reality stares us in the face. In his brief stint as prime minister, Carney used this time not to implement pro-worker policies, but some of the main pillars of Poilievre’s campaign.
To prove to the ruling class that he is on their side, Carney eliminated the carbon tax and capital gains tax as well as the federal review of infrastructure and mining projects. This has led Poilievre to claim that Carney has “plagiarized my program.” The host of CBC’s Power and Politics, David Cochrane, stated that Carney is “just like Justin, but he is copying all of Pierre’s plans.”
Carney and Poilievre differ only in form. Carney puts himself forward as a respectable banker, who “knows how the economy works.” Poilievre on the other hand has donned the garb
of right populism, denouncing the “financial elite” and appealing to the working class.
However, in content, they stand for the same thing. Poilievre and Carney each claim they will stand up to Trump — but their programs represent a capitulation.
Both have bent to Trump’s border security and military spending demands.
Using the same rhetoric as Elon Musk, both pledge to cut “wasteful government spending” and bend over backwards for corporate interests.
And in this pivotal moment, the NDP has relegated themselves to irrelevance. On issue after issue, the NDP brass has capitulated to the Liberals. Now no one believes that they will govern any differently after having been in cahoots with them for years. Unsurprisingly, voters are fleeing the NDP in droves.
The inescapable conclusion is clear: whoever wins the election, we will suffer.
There is a storm on the horizon. The captain of the ship is claiming that he will throw us overboard to save the vessel from capsizing. Working class people cannot trust these capitalist politicians who do not have our interests at heart.
We must build our own party. One that uncompromisingly fights for our interests. This is what the Revolutionary Communist Party is.
