I took a quick Uber a couple days ago. After double checking to verify the navigation system had the quickest route to my destination, the driver provided an explanation for why he double checked my route with me.
He explained that the navigation system Uber uses was untrustworthy—without fail, their system will automatically take the longest possible route, meaning that customers pay more for a drive which could have wasted less of both their time and money. He told me about how one ride that cost him maybe $20 in gas money ended up charging his rider double the amount. Make no mistake, the driver reaped no benefit here, it was Uber themselves who took a massive cut of this as commission.
He told me that Uber takes 40 per cent of each ride as profit. Profit, which we all know, is simply work stolen from the workers. After this driver paid his gas bill, he ended up making very little from that ride, and any other ride for that matter.
As we see, it’s not just the customers being taken advantage of!
