GM Layoffs Reflect Decay of Capitalism

gm layoffsContinuing the general trend of the decline in Ontario’s manufacturing sector, General Motors recently announced that nearly 1,000 jobs will be cut in Oshawa in order to relocate Chevrolet Camaro production to Lansing, Michigan. This decision was concluded in 2012, a mere week after the implementation of anti-union “right to work” legislation in that state.

Toronto university strikes victorious; Austerity can be defeated!

CUPE3902 workers and students rally with picket signsAfter a month-long strike at the University of Toronto and York University, academic workers have returned to work. Workers at both universities were able to make important advances at the bargaining table as the strike pressed forward. The action taken by the 10,000 members of CUPE 3902 and 3903 has shaken university administrations and the Ontario Liberal government, while sending a strong message to the labour movement. That message is: austerity can be defeated through bold strike action and rank-and-file militancy.
