The Murder of Michael Brown: Enough is Enough

stlouiscountyprotestThe shooting of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, followed by the breaking up of a protest march by police in riot gear and dogs, has let loose the pent-up anger and frustration of black youth in the otherwise quiet working class St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, which saw a night of looting and vandalism. These events above all show that huge pressures are building up in US society, just one scratch below the surface.

Theses on Ukraine

The root cause of the crisis in Ukraine is to be found in the disastrous effects of the restoration of capitalism. The destruction of the planned economy was a tremendous setback not only from the point of view of the economy, but also from a social point of view.

Israel's criminal shelling of Gaza and imperialist hypocrisy

A storm of bombs and fire grotesquely denominated “Operation Protective Edge” has been unleashed by the Israeli government on the civilian population of Gaza. Over the last days more than 400 tonnes of high potential bombs have hit targets within the densely populated Gaza Strip, killing at least 100 civilians, including many children, and injuring hundreds.

FIFA World Cup: Wave of protests and strikes unleashed in Brazil

The World Cup events being held in 12 cities across Brazil are set to begin in a few days. Half a million tourists are expected to flood into Brazil. However, instead of the expected celebrations and weeks of national rejoicing in a country long-known for its proud football traditions, there is enormous tension as the events are set to begin on June 12th. Demands for wage increases have led to strikes in various sectors, from bus drivers, police officers, metro operators to teachers throwing major cities into chaos and traffic congestion.

Canadian Parliament passes resolution against Bolivarian government; NDP must support the workers and poor of Venezuela

venezuela anti coup demonstration feb13The Canadian government has become the latest imperialist power to jump to the defence of the far-right protests in Venezuela.  Parliament has just passed a unanimous motion that places the responsibility for the current violence in the country on the shoulders of the Venezuelan government rather than the opposition gangs that initiated the unrest.  We have become accustomed to both the Conservatives and Liberals attacking the Venezuelan revolution, but what is concerning this time around is the fact that the NDP has sided with the two right-wing parties in condemning the Bolivarian government.  As Canada’s labour party, we think that the NDP should be standing against the right-wing at home and in Venezuela, while championing the successes of the revolution as an inspiration for our own struggles against capitalist austerity.

One year after his death, carry out the legacy of Chávez!

chavez red starIt is often the destiny of revolutionary leaders that after death those that attacked and vilified them during their lifetime begin to praise them, while simultaneously distorting their ideas, watering them down, reducing them to impotence, just as one neuters a troublesome tomcat. On the first anniversary of his death, what will be the destiny of Hugo Chávez? Will his ideas be buried with him? Are those who are now delivering flattering speeches about Chávez really defending his ideas and putting them into practice? That is the question that every honest supporter of the Bolivarian Revolution is asking today.

Russia, Ukraine, and the West: Will there be war?

latuff ukraine russia usaAs Ukraine slides deeper into chaos, the sound of war drums gets ever louder. Russian president Vladimir Putin has secured his parliament's authority to send the Russian army, not just into Crimea but also into Ukraine itself. Western leaders shook their heads and said that Russia must not intervene. Moscow held up its hands, indignantly protesting that it would not do so. But the facts seem to indicate otherwise. It would be a fatal mistake for the workers of Ukraine to have illusions in the motives of foreign powers.

Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution in the face of economic war

venezuela maduro enabling lawIn the run-up to the December 8 municipal elections the campaign of speculation, hoarding, profiteering, overpricing and sabotage of the economy has intensified. The Venezuelan government of President Maduro has denounced that there is a “slow motion coup” being implemented. The Venezuelan people are again facing a crucial battle. The December 8 municipal elections will not just be a normal electoral contest, but a major clash between the revolution (which has the democratic support of the majority of the Venezuelan people) and the counter-revolution.

The lessons of Washington's near melt-down

wall street marxFor 16 days, the world waited with bated breath as the US government was shut down and teetered on the brink of default. At the eleventh hour, a deal was rammed through both the Senate and the House and signed by Obama, thus averting the immediate crisis. What is the meaning of all this? What are the ramifications for American politics and the capitalist system itself?
