Over 60 attend historic Marxist conference in Canada PDF Print E-mail

Supporters of the Marxist journals, Fightback and La Riposte, recently gathered in Toronto for the 13th national conference of the Marxists across the Canadian state.  The conference was a historic one for a number of reasons.  Over 60 people registered to attend the conference, making it the best attended conference in the history of the Canadian Marxists.  More importantly, this was the first national conference that was fully bilingual, with all sessions and discussions translated consecutively into English and French.  Finally, the conference was held in conjunction with the centennial celebrations of the birth of British Marxist, Ted Grant. Ted’s ideas featured quite prominently throughout the weekend, helping to arm a new generation of militants in the struggle against capitalism.

Jessica and Christine talk about why Marxism is more relevant than ever to young people today, and present the need to keep socialism within the NDP.

The crisis facing youth in Canada — York University students and workers look for answers PDF Print E-mail

On a busy Thursday evening on March 7, the Socialist Fightback Club at York University in Toronto held a public event at the campus’ Student Centre. More than 25 activists, students, and workers engaged in a roundtable discussion focusing on the economic crisis and austerity facing youth and workers. Aside from outlining the difficulties that are brought on by the global capitalist crisis, there was a resourceful and vibrant conversation about what folks at the event could actively and concretely do to change the situation that they have been confronted with.

Internationalism and class unity on display at Marxist Winter School 2013 PDF Print E-mail

Over 60 comrades attended the third annual Marxist School in Montreal this past weekend, a significant increase from previous schools. Organized by supporters of La Riposte (Quebec), Fightback (Canada), and the Workers' International League (USA), the school was a resounding success, helping to unite revolutionaries from eastern North America in common struggle. Comrades from Quebec, English Canada, and the USA enjoyed two days of vibrant political discussions in both French and English, using consecutive translation during all discussions.

Packed audience at Dawson College listens to Alan Woods speak on the Bolivarian Revolution PDF Print E-mail

Over 50 students and teachers gathered at Dawson College in Montreal on Wednesday to hear Alan Woods speak on the Venezuelan Revolution. There was a healthy discussion on the progress of this magnificent movement, as well as some of its challenges. This was the third successful gathering in Montreal, and marked the last in an energetic series of events across Canada on Alan Wood's North American speaking tour. The US leg of the tour begins in the next days, and is sure to be a similarly resounding success — especially in light of recent mass struggles of the youth and of the trade unions.

Alan Woods’ first tour of North America continues to be a big success. Over 50 came out on Tuesday evening to hear Alan speak at the Graduate Students’ Association building at Concordia University. This was the second event in Montréal, after the successful French-language event on Monday, and yet another important step forward for the work here.

Over 70 people filled the room at the SH pavilion of the Université du Québec à Montréal in the first Québec event of Alan Woods’ North American tour. The event was a great success, with Alan speaking about the events of May 1968 in France, a topic very relevant to Québecois workers and youth inspired by the recent student strike.

The latest stop in the Canadian leg of the Alan Woods North American speaking tour took place in Ottawa Sunday night, in which a lively and productive discussion was had amongst the 30 students, workers, and trade unionists attending. The mood was one of intense interest and enthusiasm for the ideas of Marxism. Fightback is only just beginning to get organized in the Ottawa region and this event marks an excellent springboard for the spreading of Marxism in the Capital region.

Over 100 enthusiastic participants turned out on Saturday evening for the third event featuring In Defence of Marxism editor, Alan Woods, on his current North American speaking tour.  Held at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto, they were eager to listen to Alan speak on the prospects for revolution in the advanced capitalist countries, particularly in Europe and North America.

Ted Grant Centennial


This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ted Grant.
